INTRODUCTION

The purpose of sharing my injury story, as well as the case studies you will read later, is to help you understand the injury/recovery process and how it affects active people who enjoy exercise and sports. Injuries can affect active people in more ways than the physical pain they cause. Active individuals find that a large part of their self image is tied to physical abilities and when an injury prevents them from participating fully in their favorite pastimes it causes mental anguish. Accurate knowledge about injury prevention and management can go a long way in helping active people deal with their restrictions and make their way back to full recovery.

Fitness instructors and personal trainers will find times in their careers when they must know how to handle an injury situation, whether it be with students or their own bodies. The reaction and support from a group instructor or personal trainer can help pave the way back from an injury.

This book contains basic information about injury treatment, the psychological aspects of injury, and case histories about active people who found themselves managing injuries. The goal is to help both the individual exerciser or athlete and the fitness instructor learn about injuries and how to make the most of recovery.
